Russ Barber – Chairman of BSCA

Russ BarberRuss started coaching in 1990 at City of Hull Swimming Club, and was instrumental in bringing the clubs together in the city to form Kingston upon Hull Swimming Club in 1996.

Became Age Group Coach at City of Leeds SC in 1997 and then Head Coach at City of Sheffield Swim Squad in 2001. Helped create City of Sheffield Swim Squad Ltd in 2013 and is now Director of Coaching there.

Has coached Swimmers to over 100 International caps to date, winning medals at European Youth Olympics, European Juniors, World Youth, European Champs, Commonwealth Games and World Championships, and is a 3x Olympic coach.

Russ is Director and Head Coach of Swim Skills, teaching a new generation of youngsters in GB and Europe the skills necessary for success in the sport.

A Life Member and Fellow of the BSCA having been heavily involved for nearly 20 years, and is honoured to serve as Chair (acting) for 2017.


Brian McGuinness – Executive Director

Brian-McGuinness.jpg#asset:618:urlBrian McGuinness is BSCA Executive Director, running the BSCA office, co-ordinating events and representational activities, as well as managing the business of the association. Brian has been involved in coaching professionally for over 3 decades. A swimming coach by trade he has worked at grass roots level, all the way through to the top levels of the sport, including Olympic Games & World Championships; as well as everywhere in between. He was the first winner of the BSCA Alan Hime Memorial Award in 1981 for his work in producing a host of international competitors in a short period of time in unfashionable Oldham. He has experience working in sport within local government, schools, private clubs as well as regional and national governing bodies. He is a presenter, tutor & assessor within the ASA UKCC Level 3 Coach education programme. His company CoachEdUK, provides educational & development support for coaches as well as representing coaches in employment law and respective sports law matters. He has been heavily involved for the last 15 years in representing the cases of coaches where child welfare & child protection concerns & allegations have been made. Brian is a Board member of the World Swimming Coaches Association (WSCA) in the position of CEO of their Europe office. He has been married for over 25 years, has two sons and also has a keen interest in football, music and film.

Has coached swimmers to be selected for and win medals at the last two European Youth Olympic Festivals (1 gold, 2 silvers and 3 bronze), the last four European Junior Championships (1 gold, 2 silver and 1 bronze), the FINA World Open Water Championships 2015 (two selected) and the 2014 Commonwealth Games (1 bronze)

Mark  Rose

Name: Mark Rose

Club / Programme: City of Manchester Aquatics

Position: Head of Swimming Coaching

Achievements:

Developing a team from scratch to 16 swimmers on British Programmes & turning around a programme recently. Heading up British teams as they train & compete around the world.

After commencing his career at Rotherham Metro & then Trident SC in 1993 Mark moved to Head up the Derventio programme in 2003 and also worked as Head Coach to the Midland team from 2003 to 2005.

He has worked on various National Event camps and teams throughout his six years at Derventio including the following:

  • Coach to European Junior Team 2007 & 2008
  • Head Coach to the month long British Swimming End of Year Tours to Asia & Australasia in 2006/7 & 2007/8 seasons

During his time at Derventio Mark directly coached 14 swimmers to British Swimming Teams and programmes.
In January 2009 Mark was appointed Head of Swimming Coaching at the Manchester ASA Beacon Programme.

Adam  Ruckwood

Name: Adam Ruckwood

Position: Head Coach

Achievements:

Coached swimmers to medal winning performances at European Championships, Commonwealth Games, World Student Games, World Junior Championships, European Junior Championships, European Youth Olympics and World Schools Games. Also coached numerous other internationals, national senior and junior champions and British Record Holders.
As a swimmer swam for Great Britain at three Olympic Games in 1992, 1996 and 2000. Won numerous medals at international level including Gold, Silver and Bronze medals at Commonwealth Games, Silver and Bronze medals at European Championships and was a five-time World Championship finalist.

I moved to Soundwell near Bristol in 1986 and then took up my current position working for Bassetlaw District Council as Coach and Development Officer in 1991. I am a level 4 coach and manage a group of five coaches who help me run the Bassetlaw programme.

Glenn  Smith

Name: Glenn Smith

Achievements:

  • As a GB swimming coach, Glenn was part of the coaching team that spotted the talent of young Rebecca Adlington. He coached her during her early development years leading on to her great swimming achievements and becoming double Olympic champion.
  • He coached Paralympic champion Sam Hynd for 8 years. During this time Sam won gold at the 2008 Paralympic Games in Beijing and set the previous world record for the S8 400m freestyle.
  • He's also coached Sam's brother, Ollie Hynd MBE, for the past 9 years. Ollie has achieved great success becoming British, Commonwealth, European, World and Paralympic champion and recently broke his brother's S8 400m freestyle world record at the IPC World Swimming Championships 2015. Together, Ollie and Glenn are looking on to the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio.
  • Glenn is also currently coaching Charlotte Henshaw, London 2012 Paralympic silver medalist. In 2009, she became European champion and went on to break the European record in 2010 and again at the IPC World Swimming Championships 2015. She?s also won silver and bronze medals at the IPC World Swimming Championships in 2010 and 2013, and a silver in 2015. Glenn and Charlotte are working hard with the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio on the horizon.
