City of Peterborough Swimming Club is proud to open the opportunity for a part-time Assistant Coach
to work with the Head Coach and coaching team as part of a dynamic and exciting future for COPS.
COPS is already well established at producing National and International success from its small roots.
COPS boasts access to 4 25m pool facilities, plus long course pool access and performance gym
along with an exciting new university within half a mile of our main the pool. We are looking for a
candidate that loves developing the person/athlete and being part of their and the team’s growth as
we look forward to an exciting few years ahead.
COPS has managed its way through this pandemic with security, stability and high member
engagement and is looking for a candidate to help build the foundations of the club for future success
in infrastructure and outcomes. The ideal candidate will be highly motivated, a people person, care
about personal growth and invest in supporting all elements of the team in its growth and love
swimming.
Role Details
Job Title: Assistant Coach
Term: Part-time. With a view to going full-time for the successful candidate.
Reporting to: Head Coach and Chairman
Responsible for: Co-ordinating and leading the Competitive pathway of COPS members. The
proposed role will be centred on four core activities:
• Assist the coaching team with Identification of talent from the City’s
school and Learn to Swim swimming programmes.
• Develop a programme for our members in Competitive & Competitive
Plus squads to achieve County & Regional qualification.
• Assist the Head Coach with the delivery and development of the club’s Age Group Performance pathway members’ skills to allow them to
progress through the club as part of a LTAD programme.
Contract: 15 hours per week, 52 weeks per year, 28 days holiday (inclusive of bank
holidays)
Salary: Hourly rate package + process bonus incentives. NEST Pension contributions
On Deck Objectives
• Work closely with the Head Coach to develop an integrated achievement agenda by assisting
in developing club structure, season planning, session planning and competition planning for
all aspects of the club’s activities.
• Work closely with the Strength and Conditioning staff to aid membership conditioning in and
out of the water.
• Manage all day-to-day activities associated with COPS’ Competitive Pathway programme
including planning, training, competition entry and league selection.
• Assist Head Coach with coaching and direction of Age-group swimmers in Age-Group
Performance squad to achieve skill standards for qualification and success at Regional
Championship standard or higher.
• Deputise for the Head Coach and full-time Assistant Coach to allow time off for annual leave
and at other times by prior agreement.
• Attend selected galas and open meets as agreed with the Head Coach.
Administration Objectives
• Planning of 3 squads’ sessions and cycles
• Assist full-time Assistant Coach with engagement of Peterborough City Council’s Learn to
Swim programme to identify swimmers that meet the required entry standard for COPS and
encourage them to join the COPS programme.
• To help generate awareness of the club’s activities across the city and beyond to ensure
schools, teachers, and young people’s services know about the programme, including social
media club communication platforms.
• Liaise with part-time coaching staff, club committee and club members.
• Attend meetings with outside agencies and internal club meetings where necessary.
• Investigate the opportunity of expanding the Satellite Development Squad program into other
locations in and around the city.
• Use TeamUnify system to maintain accurate swimmer records, events and assist with COPS
website.
• Other reasonable duties that may be required from time to time. Such changes that are
permanent will be negotiated with the post holder and incorporated into the job description.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Experience
• Qualification/experience in swimming, Level 2/Swimming Coach or Teacher
• SCUK safeguarding certificate.
• First aid qualification
• The ability to manage and motivate individuals and teams to achieve high standards of
performance.
• The ability to make sound decisions, often under pressure and too tight deadlines.
• Experienced in relationship building skills.
• Track record of success in a similar role, within a swimming club or learn to swim programme.
• Adhere to the Swim England’s Wave Power safeguarding policy and procedures.
• Adhere to required health and safety policy and procedures, including pool providers policies.
• To be able to confidently communicate with swimmers, parents and carers.
• Self-starter with the ability to generate new thinking and ideas with minimal input or
supervision.
• Excellent verbal, written, structured planning and thinking skills.
• Motivation, coaching and development of part-time and volunteer coaches to deliver effective
capability and practice club wide.
• The ability to plan, prioritise and work flexibly in responding to the changing needs and
demands of a dynamic set of requirements within the role.
Further Information
The successful candidate will have the opportunity in 6 or 12 months to move into a full-time post,
should they be successful on review.

coaching schemes with our own members.
